Army Rank and Awards

It would be a good idea for you to learn the Army basic rank structure.  Be able to recognize the enlisted and especially officer ranks, so you'll know when to salute, and also how to address someone.  In addition, I also get questions on what kind of awards you can earn while in the Army, and also how to put them on your uniform.

While in basic, you don't really have alot to worry about, award-wise.  Recruits seem to be very interested on what they will eventually be putting on their uniforms:-))  In BT, you will be earning your rifle and grenade qualifications, which will be worn on your Class As (green suit).  There are some awards and certificates you can earn in BT, but these are not things you will be able to wear on your uniform.  Some may get you promoted though!  Each class usually has an honor graduate and a runner-up.  There are also awards for the highest PT test scores and Basic Rifle Marskmanship qualification scores.  Some individual companies may even have additional awards.

Army Regulation 670-1 Wear and Appearance of Army Uniforms and Insignia
Some of you may already be participating in drills with your National Guard or Reserve unit.  I get quite a few questions on what is acceptable to wear, when to wear what and on how to wear your uniform (as well as things such as mustaches and personal appearance).  You can find all the answers here in this regulation.
